Dance

The Dance Division offers classes for students who wish to concentrate solely on dance or wish to augment the dance classes offered in the Triple Threat Division. The students involved in this dynamic dance program will gain a solid foundation for many forms of dance. The program is designed for students who will make a year-long commitment to each and every class.

  • Creative Movement for Tiny Tots — This class encourages free expression, while teaching basic elements of dance, including movement quality, body awareness, rhythm and spatial awareness.  Confidence, self-esteem and imagination are encouraged and strengthened through dance.
  • Combination Class (Jazz / Tap) — Two classes in one! Combo classes are a great way to introduce students to a variety of dance forms. Students can start making the connection between different dance disciplines, and seeing what they have in common. A great experience for students ready to expand their dance horizons.
  • Ballet (Cecchetti syllabus) — Beauty, flow and elegance are inherent in the elements of ballet.  Ballet is the classical dance form that can be mastered by itself or used as a technical base or supplement to other dance forms.  Classes focus on overall body alignment and awareness with emphasis on proper usage of feet and legs and execution of turnout.  Carriage and usage of upper torso and arms are also stressed.  Traditional barre work, centre work and combinations are included in all classes.
  • Jazz — An exciting dance form full of rhythm, syncopation, passion and life, jazz is steeped in the rhythms of pop and R&B music. Students strive to achieve competence in movement, use of communicative possibilities in dance, correctness of posture and performance of all movements. Technical competence is based upon wide tempo range, strength, endurance and flexibility associated with a developed sense of movement designed to produce a variety of emotions. While encouraging the student to develop their own personal style, jazz can be powerful and percussive or expressive and lyrical.
  • Hip Hop — A high-energy class that uses the latest sounds in rap, R&B and pop music together with movements influenced by some of today’s hottest video choreographers.  Hip hop encompasses movement that has elements of poppin’, locking, and breaking as well as freestyle movement to give students the opportunity to develop their own sense of style.  Hip hop is diverse, and forever changing.
  • Tap — Tap focuses on rhythms and intricate footwork to create a percussion instrument out of the dancer’s feet. Technique classes will be given using music ranging from contemporary pop, jazz and musical theatre. Through choreography and improvisation, the student explores the many different ways tap dance can be used as an artistic expression.
  • Stretch/Tech — Students can improve their performance, increase flexibility, prevent injury and fine-tune technique in this class. Recommended for dance students and Triple Threat students. (Ages 12+ only)
  • Contemporary - Falling between jazz and ballet, contemporary dance merges the technical elements of ballet with an instinctual “storytelling” element, encouraging dancers to emotionally connect with and express themselves through music and movement. (Ages 12+ only)

Special Events

Crazy Daze (Nov. 15, 16, 17, 19, 2011 & Feb. 28, 29, Mar. 1, 3, 2012)

This is a day where students can stray from the regular dress code! No black allowed! Students can feel free to wear an old recital costume. The brighter the better! A few rules though: The attire should be in keeping with "dancewear", therefore students must be able to move easily in the outfit and wear regular dance shoes. No masks are allowed.

Open House (Dec. 6-10, 2011)

Parents are invited to attend the annual Open House which features an informal in-house presentation during regular class time to demonstrate what the students have been working on. Please note that due to parental concern no photography or video cameras will be allowed.

Year-End Showcase

Each year ends in June with a thrilling showcase featuring performances by students in all the Dance Classes.
  • All students MUST be available for the Year End Showcase dress rehearsal on Wednesday, May 30, 2012. Please plan accordingly. Details will follow at a later date.

  • The Year End Showcase takes place on June 2, 2012, at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.  i.e., there are two identical shows on the same day.

  • Year End Showcase tickets for the show will go on sale through Ticketmaster on Wednesday, April 25. Due to fire regulations, all people entering the theatre must have a ticket. No babes in arms please. All students will have the opportunity to watch the dress rehearsal, therefore it is not necessary to purchase tickets for your performing child (they will remain backstage during the show). In past years Dance Shows were SOLD OUT.  PLEASE do not wait until the last minute to order tickets.

  • The Year End Showcase is professionally filmed and DVDs are available for purchase. An order form will be sent home with each student in April. Please note: this is a service we provide so that there is comfort for all patrons to watch the show free from obstruction by parents videotaping.  No recording devices of any kind will be permitted in the theatre.  Randolph Academy has permission from each parent to film and take photos of the students, but audience members do not have permission.

  • Costume fittings for Year-End Showcase costumes will take place at the beginning of December. You have given us a costume fee for each class your child is enrolled in. Every effort is made to keep the costs of the costumes down.  Not all children will have costumes made for them.  Some will be asked to bring items from home.  No refunds for costumes after January 15, 2012.
