| COURSE OUTLINEThe course will explore the many different ways tap dance can be used as an artistic expression. Technique classes will be given using music ranging from classical, jazz and musical theatre. Through choreography and improvisation, the student will discover the different frameworks of tap dancing. A lecture on the history of tap dance will be given and relevant videos will be reviewed. The classroom objectives of the modern jazz techniques are competence in movement, use of communicative possibilities in dance, correctness of posture and performance of all movements. Technical competence is based upon wide tempo range, strength, endurance and flexibility associated with a developed sense of movement designed to produce a variety of emotions. The ballet class is designed to develop muscular control, performance presentation and discipline. Discipline, being one of the most important factors of dance, aids in the ability to focus, comprehend and digest the complete movement of dance. In order to mimic, exactly while adding one's own personality and interpretation. The challenge for the dancer will be to learn the steps and terminology and adapt them to one's body to produce a natural flow and grace of movement. A stretch / strength class has been incorporated into the beginner ballet students' course requirements to aid in the development of flexibility and strengthening of the body. This course will provide students with an historical overview of theatrical dance from its early beginnings to today. The content will trace the lineage of dance focusing on ballet, modern, jazz, tap, social and musical theatre disciplines. Discussions will include the contributions of significant dancers and choreographers, specific works and renowned companies to the development of dance. Through lectures and videos you will learn to understand, critically examine and appreciate the theatrical dance forms you see and practice today.
